National Lampoon’s Palmer Vacation

December 31st, 2008

We’ve just returned home after our first family vacation together. We managed to visit briefly with a bunch of my relatives, so now Kelly knows faces along with names. We’re both back at work today on New Year’s Eve, which is unfortunate.

On the way home, we visited Carlsbad Caverns. I’d highly recommend walking in on foot rather than taking the elevator, as this gives you a feel for how immense the hole you’re standing in truly is. It’s also a great workout for those of us with desk jobs to descend 750 feet on foot, even if it is on paved walkways.

Married life

November 20th, 2008

Kelly and I were married on October 25. It’s a great feeling to be done with that planning and stress, and we’re getting settled in. Married life is good. Thanks to all who attended our wedding and/or sent well-wishes our way. We’ll be posting some wedding pictures eventually, so stay tuned.

A tale of soggy cardboard and creatures of the deep

September 23rd, 2008

Kelly and I had a nice three-day weekend. Saturday morning we went whale watching and saw a blue whale, which was quite cool. I’ll post a picture later. Yesterday, we took the day off work and went to Sea World. Neither of us had been lately, so it was fun.

For some reason, Sea World gives out cardboard drinking straws with their plastic smoothie cups. I failed to notice this until I had gagged from a mouthful of soggy cardboard. Gross.

Search harder, please

September 4th, 2008

If you use the search function in Windows XP to search for “A word or phrase in the file”, you may have noticed that it sometimes returns no results, even if you know there should be. This is a fun feature of Windows, where only a specific set of file types are actually searched. See the article Using the “A word or phrase in the file” search criterion may not work, and try Method 2 for a relatively painless solution.

Alternatively, download Cygwin and use grep like the hardcore nerd that you are.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert

September 1st, 2008

EA is offering a free download of Command & Conquer: Red Alert as a promotion for the upcoming Red Alert 3. I have a lot of fond memories of playing Red Alert multiplayer against my friends. Good times.

I wish I had one of those

Adam and Jamie of Mythbusters fame built a few pretty cool paintball guns as a CPU vs. GPU advertisement. The second one is especially impressive.

Gmail security

August 19th, 2008

If you use Gmail, I’d highly recommend checking out the new SSL feature, which forces Gmail to always use https(secure http) instead of regular http. This makes you less vulnerable to hackers, especially if you check your email over a wireless network or on a public computer. Hopefully Gmail will enable this by default in the near future, but better safe than sorry.

Cake Wrecks

August 13th, 2008

While searching through wedding cake pictures, I stumbled across Cake Wrecks. There are some disasters here, all right. Pretty much all of them except for this one, which is incredible.

But…what does it do?

The Harmony RF Remote Control is the most expensive remote I’ve ever seen, although I must admit I’ve never looked for a more expensive one. It looks like a cell phone that can’t flip shut and can’t make calls. Although it’s nice that you don’t need line-of-sight to the TV to use it, I don’t plan on getting one anytime in the near…ever. It’s probably cheaper to just hire the neighbor kids to change the channel for you.
